The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Pedestrian Protection Goes Up Before the First Cut

California Building Code (CBC) Section 3303.2 says demolishing any building shall not be commenced until pedestrian protection is in place as required by Chapter 33. Section 3306.1 says pedestrians shall be protected during construction, remodeling and demolition as required by the chapter and Table 3306.1, and signs shall direct pedestrian traffic. The type of protection depends on two numbers: the height of the construction and its distance to the lot line.

Step 2: Reading Table 3306.1

For work 8 feet or less in height: construction railings if the lot line is less than 5 feet away, and none at 5 feet or more. For work more than 8 feet in height: a barrier and covered walkway if the lot line is less than 5 feet away, or 5 feet or more but not more than one-fourth the height of construction; a barrier alone where the lot line is 5 feet or more but between one-fourth and one-half the height; and none where it is 5 feet or more and exceeds one-half the height. Compute the one-fourth and one-half heights first, then place the lot-line distance between them.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
