The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: When the Seismic Rules Apply
Under 2025 CRC R1003.3, masonry and concrete chimneys in Seismic Design Category C, D0, D1 or D2 must be reinforced and anchored as detailed in R1003.3.1, R1003.3.2 and R1003.4. In Seismic Design Category A or B, reinforcement and seismic anchorage are not required. CBC 2113.3 says the same for A and B, applies 2113.3.1, 2113.3.2 and 2113.4 to C and D, and sends categories E and F to the engineered masonry provisions of CBC 2101 through 2108. Find the category on the plans before you order steel.
Step 2: Vertical Bars: Count by Width
For a chimney up to 40 inches wide, place four No. 4 continuous vertical bars anchored in the foundation, in the concrete, between wythes of solid masonry or in the cells of hollow units, and grout them (R1003.3.1). For a chimney more than 40 inches wide, add two more No. 4 bars for each additional 40 inches of width or fraction thereof. Keep the grout from bonding to the flue liner so the liner is free to move with thermal expansion. For a chimney serving a masonry fireplace, R1001.3.1 and Table R1001.1 also add two No. 4 bars for each additional flue.
The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
