The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: What the Code Says About Signs in General (CBC 3107.1)

2025 CBC Section 3101.1 puts signs in Chapter 31, and Section 3107.1 says signs shall be designed, constructed and maintained in accordance with the code. The Chapter 32 rules apply when a sign leaves the lot: Section 3201.2 measures the projection of any structure as the distance measured horizontally from the lot line to the outermost point of the projection, and Section 3201.3 says the chapter does not permit violating other laws or ordinances regulating public property.

Step 2: Below 8 Feet: Not Allowed (Section 3202.2)

Encroachments into the public right-of-way above grade and below 8 feet in height are prohibited except steps, architectural features and awnings (Sections 3202.2.1 to 3202.2.3). Doors and windows shall not open or project into the public right-of-way. An awning, including valances, needs a vertical clearance of not less than 7 feet from the right-of-way to its lowest part (Section 3202.2.3). A sign is not on that exception list, so a sign cannot hang lower than 8 feet over the right-of-way.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
