The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Why a Tile Setter Reads CALGreen

The 2025 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) limits the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the adhesives, sealants and caulks used on a project. Section 4.504.2.1 (residential) and Section 5.504.4.1 (nonresidential) say adhesives, adhesive bonding primers, adhesive primers, sealants, sealant primers and caulks shall comply with local or regional air district rules where applicable, or SCAQMD Rule 1168 VOC limits, as shown in the tables. Tile adhesives and the caulk at corners and changes of plane are on that list.

Step 2: The Tile Adhesive Limit: 65 g/L

Table 4.504.1 (Adhesive VOC Limit, less water and less exempt compounds, in grams per liter) lists ceramic tile adhesives at 65 g/L. Nearby lines show how much tighter other categories are: drywall and panel adhesives 50, subfloor adhesives 50, VCT and asphalt tile adhesives 50, multipurpose construction adhesives 70, and other adhesives not specifically listed 50. Nonresidential Table 5.504.4.1 prints the same 65 for ceramic tile adhesives. Footnote 1 says that if an adhesive bonds dissimilar substrates together, the adhesive with the highest VOC content is allowed.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
