The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: What D-03 Installs and Which Code Applies
CSLB defines D-03 Awnings as installing, modifying or repairing aluminum, metal, vinyl or canvas awnings and patio covers, freestanding or attached to a structure; patio enclosures and carports are not included (CSLB, Get Licensed to Build, C-61 Limited Specialty Classifications, D-03). The 2025 California Building Code (CBC) section that governs the product is Section 3105 Awnings and Canopies. Where the awning hangs over a public sidewalk, CBC Chapter 32 Encroachments Into the Public Right-of-Way adds clearance and projection limits. Learn the two together: Section 3105 tells you what the awning is made of, Chapter 32 tells you where it may hang.
Step 2: Frame and Load Rule - CBC 3105.2
Awnings and canopies must be designed and built to withstand wind or other lateral loads and the live loads required by Chapter 16, with structural members protected to prevent deterioration. CBC 3105.2 says awning frames must be noncombustible material, fire-retardant-treated wood, heavy timber complying with Section 2304.11, or 1-hour construction. The awning may be fixed, retractable, folding or collapsible. An untreated lumber frame on a commercial storefront is not on that list.
