The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Why Egress Doors Are Not Allowed Plain Bolts

2025 CBC §1010.2.1 says the unlatching of any door or leaf for egress shall require not more than one motion in a single linear or rotational direction to release all latching and all locking devices, and that manual bolts are not permitted. It then lists an exception for the bolts that §1010.2.4, Item 4 allows. A pair of doors is where this shows up in the field: the inactive leaf is normally bolted top and bottom, and the code decides which bolt you may use.

Step 2: The Three Bolt Types in the Table

2025 CBC Table 1010.2.4 has three columns: surface- or flush-mounted manual bolts, automatic flush bolts, and constant latching bolts. §1010.2.4, Item 4 allows them on the inactive leaf of a pair of doors in accordance with the table, provided that the inactive leaf does not have a doorknob, panic hardware or similar operating hardware. If a leaf has a knob or a bar, it is an active leaf and no bolt from this table may be used on it.
