The first steps of this lesson

Step 1: Who Section 5.508.2 Covers

2025 CALGreen Section 5.508.2 applies to new commercial refrigeration systems in retail food stores of 8,000 square feet or more of conditioned area that use refrigerated display cases or walk-in coolers or freezers connected to remote compressor units or condensing units. New includes both new facilities and replacement of existing systems. It applies to high-GWP refrigerants, those with a GWP of 150 or greater. Low-GWP refrigerants under 150, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide, are the stated exception. Section 5.508.1 separately bars HVAC, refrigeration and fire suppression equipment containing CFCs or halons.

Step 2: Piping Rules That Reduce Leaks

Piping must comply with the California Mechanical Code and be accessible for leak protection and repair (Section 5.508.2.1). Threaded pipe, copper tubing under 1/4 inch OD, flared connections and short-radius elbows are not used, with these exceptions: threaded connections at the compressor rack; tubing under 1/4 inch OD in systems of 5 pounds of refrigerant or less, clamped to a rigid base to keep vibration below 8 mils; double-flared connections for pressure controls, valve pilot lines and oil; and short-radius elbows only where space prohibits long-radius elbows.

The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
