The first steps of this lesson
Step 1: Automatic Boilers Are Sorted Into Groups
2025 CMC §1003.2.1 says automatic boilers shall have controls and limit devices in accordance with ASME CSD-1 or Table 1003.2.1. The table sorts boilers into groups by fuel and by fuel input range (inclusive): gas Groups A to D, oil Groups E to H, electric Group K, and Group L for gas, oil or coal boilers of 12,500,000 Btu/h or more (per NFPA 85). The controls, safety-control timing and limit devices you must provide depend on the group, and all controls must carry the approval of an approved testing agency or be accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (§1003.2).
Step 2: Find the Group From the Input Range
Gas: Group A is 0 to 400,000 Btu/h, B is 400,001 to 2,500,000, C is 2,500,001 to 5,000,000 and D is over 5,000,000. Oil: Group E is 0 to 400,000, F is 400,001 to 1,000,000, G is 1,000,001 to 3,000,000 and H is over 3,000,000. Footnote 1 says the fuel input is determined by one of two methods: the burner input, which shall not exceed the burner nameplate or the manufacturer-identified input, or the nominal boiler rating as determined by the building official plus 25 percent. The 25 percent can push a boiler up into the next group.
The remaining 3 steps, the worked example and the quiz are in the course. This is a preview. The full lesson, with the step-by-step explanations, a worked example and a quick-check quiz, is inside the classroom.
